Blowing dust: what the climatology actually says
The strongest measurement of El Paso dust comes from a 2007 American Meteorological Society paper by Novlan and Hardiman of the National Weather Service in El Paso and Gill of the University of Texas at El Paso, hosted by the NWS. Working from 1,093 analyzed cases, they put El Paso at an average of 14.5 significant blowing-dust events per year, where significant means visibility fell to 6 miles or less for at least 2 hours. That is not haze. That is a repeated, measurable loss of visibility across the city.
The timing is the part that matters for anything mechanical left outdoors. The same paper places 64% of all events in February through May and gives a 42% probability of blowing dust on any single day during March, April and May. During events the study reports mean winds of 25 to 30 mph gusting 35 to 40 mph, with mean relative humidity of 18%. Dry, fast air carrying coarse particles at those speeds is precisely the load that ends up in a slide gate track, a roller bearing, and on a photo eye lens.
El Paso has been a federal dust nonattainment area since 1991
Dust here is not only a weather observation, it is a regulatory status. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality records El Paso as a PM10 Moderate Nonattainment area, designated on November 6, 1991 and still in force. Sun: among the sunniest, and what that buys a gate
NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information record El Paso receiving 83% of possible sunshine and 193 clear days a year. That places El Paso among the sunniest cities in the United States, a claim worth stating carefully, because the same sunshine data reads 85% for Phoenix and Tucson. El Paso belongs in that top group rather than at the top of it, and local copy gets this wrong constantly.
For gate hardware the sunshine cuts both ways. It is the reason solar gate openers are genuinely practical here rather than a compromise, which matters on the acreage properties out east and up the valley where trenching power to an entry is expensive.
